Mayor Mick Cornett, Oaklahoma City
The son of postal worker and school teacher, Mick Cornett is a fifth-generation Oklahoman. Today, Mayor Cornett is in the final months of a successful 14-year run as Oklahoma City’s first four-term Mayor.
He’s considered one of the most honored mayors in U.S. history – top mayor in the state, top mayor in the country – and an international panel selected him as the No. 2 mayor in the world. Newsweek magazine called him one of the “five most innovative Mayors in the United States.” Governing named him “Public Official of the Year” in 2010. Politico placed him on the publication’s Politico 50 list of “thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics in 2015.”
He currently serves as the President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
No mayor has been more active in economic development measures and the city’s economy has grown and diversified during his term. His priorities as mayor have been to improve Oklahoma City’s standards in health and education and he has worked to change the culture of the community in those important areas. Due to the remarkable leadership of Cornett and his predecessors, Oklahoma City has experienced one of the most remarkable transformations in American History.
His leadership was instrumental in bringing the Oklahoma City Thunder to Oklahoma.
Known as a problem solver who gets things done, Cornett is well known for finding real solutions to some of the most challenging issues facing Oklahomans.
Cornett has appeared on national television more than 200 times spreading his optimistic and pragmatic vision, while promoting Oklahoma in a positive manner along the way. Nearly 1.5 million people worldwide have viewed his TED TALK on Oklahoma City’s health and wellness efforts.
Mick earned a degree in journalism at the University of Oklahoma and an MBA from New York University and he is married to Terri Cornett and has three sons and four grandchildren – who are seventh-generation Oklahomans.

David works for the Virgin Group, where he manages the Virgin Earth Challenge: Sir Richard Branson’s $25M innovation prize for scalable and sustainable ways of removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. He is a proud Geography graduate, and also has an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London.
